How to Remove Rust Stains from Stainless Steel Sink

Stainless steel is one of the most popular building and construction materials because it is durable, easy-to-clean and shiny. In the kitchen, stainless steel sinks are usually preferred by homeowners. However, this material can also have rust stains and if not removed right away, this can lead to corrosion and eventually damage to the surface.

To prevent this dilemma, here are different methods to remove rust stains from a stainless steel kitchen sink:

1. Vinegar and Baking Soda

This is one of the most common remedies to a stainless kitchen sink stained with rust. First, set aside about two tablespoons of baking soda and place it on a bowl. Next, slowly pour vinegar, sufficient enough to create a paste. If the paste is too watery, simple add more baking soda and if the paste is too think, add a little more vinegar until you get the desired consistency. Ensure that the sink is dry. Apply the paste on the stained areas and let it stand for about 10 to 15 minutes. After 10 minutes or so had lapsed, rinse the stained spots with soap and water. If the stains will not disapper completely and not all have been removed with the first attempt, repeat the procedure until all the rust stains are gone.

2. Salt and Lemon Juice

Another effective way to rid of rust stains on a stainless steel sink is taking advantage of the acidic properties of lemon juice. Keep in mind, however, that discoloration may occur on the stained area after cleansing but it will just be minimal, depending on how bad the stains are. With the affected area wiped dry, squeeze some lemon juice on the stains. Leave it for about 15 minutes. With a cloth, rub off the stains until they disappear. If there are still some remaining spots with rust, repeat the procedure but this time, leave the lemon juice longer and add some salt on the areas. Get an old brush and work on the affected areas until there are no rusted spots.

3. Vinegar and Scouring Pad

If you do not have available baking soda, your good old scouring pad and vinegar can also do the trick. What you need to do is to pour some amount of vinegar on the sink and add some little elbow grease on it. Let it stand for about 15 minutes and gently scrub the stains away with the use of a scouring pad. This should remove the stains in no time.

4. Heavy Duty Scouring Stick

What’s great about this stain remover is that this is not only effective on removing rusts on sinks but also other types of stains such as deep stains, hard water rings, build up and paint. This stick provides good abrasive action and is also safe to use even in the presence of children. Apart from stains, it can also remove mineral deposits that are in the drains and faucets.

Bring back the luster of your stainless kitchen sink with these tips and enjoy your time in the kitchen.
